Gum disease is a serious oral health condition that affects your smile and overall wellness. Fortunately, you can help prevent gum disease through a few simple habits, many of which start at home.
- Brush your teeth at least twice daily or after every meal.
- Floss your teeth at least once daily or after every meal.
- If you smoke or use tobacco, consider quitting.
- If you notice any changes in your oral health, please consult with my dental staff.
Of course, healthy at-home habits must always be complemented by regular checkups and professional teeth cleanings. Visit my dental office every six months.
What Is the Difference Between Gingivitis and Gum Disease?
Gingivitis is an early stage of gum disease. If I catch your disease at this stage, I can typically cure it. When you allow gingivitis to fester, it becomes periodontitis, which is only treatable.
However, treatment is crucial even if I cannot cure you. Treatment substantially mitigates your risks for severe gum disease complications, such as:
- Tooth Loss
- Heart and Lung Problems
- Premature Labor
Newer studies even link gum disease to Alzheimer’s disease.
With treatment, we can help restore your oral health and significantly reduce your risk of complications.
Signs of Gingivitis or Gum Disease
Signs of gingivitis and gum disease may include some or all of the following:
- Bleeding gums, especially when brushing and flossing
- Tooth sensitivity, especially to hot or cold foods/drinks
- Persistent or recurring bad breath
- Loose or mobile teeth
- Gum pocketing or recession
You don’t have to have every symptom to be diagnosed, so always call my office if you notice oral health changes that don’t improve within a few days.
