Composite Bonding in Arlington, VA

A smiling woman with composite bondingAt Clarendon Family Dentistry, we offer conservative treatment options whenever they make sense for your dental needs. Cosmetic dental bonding is an excellent example because it is a less invasive alternative to treatments like dental crowns or veneers.

Dental bonding uses composite resin—the same material used for tooth-colored fillings—which consists of a combination of glass or quartz particles in a resin base. The result is a material that mimics the appearance of tooth enamel for a natural-looking, seamless repair.

Cosmetic Issues We Treat with Dental Bonding

If you have any of the following smile concerns, you may be a candidate for composite bonding:

  • Chipped teeth
  • Broken teeth
  • Gaps or uneven spacing
  • Tooth shape or size differences
  • Discolored or badly stained teeth
  • Exposed tooth roots

Composite dental bonding requires minimal tooth preparation, so we can treat several teeth during one appointment, often without numbing.

What's Involved with Dental Bonding

Dr Brigid Mooney doing composite bonding in Arlington VAGetting composite bonding begins with a consultation to discuss your dental goals and determine if this treatment is right for you. Here’s what to expect:

  • Color Matching — We use a shade guide to customize the material to closely match your tooth enamel. This means you can be sure the resulting repair will blend seamlessly with your smile.
  • Surface Preparation — We lightly etch the tooth with a special liquid, which ensures a strong bond with the composite material.
  • Resin Application — Dr. Rooney expertly places the material on your tooth in a putty-like state. She builds it up, layer by layer, expertly matching the tooth’s shape and contours and hardening each layer using a special curing light.
  • Polishing — Once Dr. Rooney is satisfied with the results, she polishes the tooth to a sheen that matches the rest of your smile.

Composite Tooth-Colored Fillings

Tooth-colored composite resin is great for minor aesthetic repairs and is strong and durable enough for dental fillings. The process is similar to bonding, except the first step is to numb the tooth and remove the decayed portion. Because of how we bond composite fillings, we can preserve healthy tooth structure while maintaining a seamless appearance that blends in with your smile.

Because crowns, veneers, and fillings are stain-resistant and maintain their color over time, traditional teeth whitening treatments do not work on them. These restorations are made from materials like porcelain or composite resin, so they won’t respond to whitening agents the way natural tooth enamel does.

If you attempt to whiten your teeth with over-the-counter products or professional treatments, you may notice that your natural teeth become lighter, while your crowns, veneers, or fillings stay the same color. This can lead to uneven results, making dental work more noticeable instead of blending in naturally.

If you’re concerned about the color of your dental restorations, please give us a call at Clarendon Family Dentistry. Our cosmetic dentists in Arlington, VA, will be happy to talk with you about your smile goals. We can replace older or discolored crowns, veneers, and fillings to give you a brighter, more uniform grin. Your dentist can also guide you on the best way to whiten your natural teeth while keeping your overall appearance balanced.

That way, your dentist can match the restoration to your ideal shade.
