If you spend time watching videos and following influencers on the internet, you’ve probably stumbled across “do-it-yourself” content. While some hints and hacks are good—for example, new ways to remove stubborn stains—others can be harmful, primarily when centered around health and dental topics.

Let’s explore just some of the viral content your Arlington dentist knows is bad news.

Dangerous DIY Dentistry Trends

TikTok is filled with DIY dentistry, but it is mostly harmful and typically ineffective. We can’t possibly cover all the dangerous content on the web, but we thought we’d tackle a few of the most popular.

Do-It-Yourself Teeth Whitening

The latest trend is using lemon juice and baking soda to whiten teeth. Baking soda, as found in toothpaste, may be beneficial to a degree. However, mixing the minimally abrasive baking soda with lemon juice is an acidic cocktail that your teeth don’t need. It can damage the enamel.

Coconut Oil Pulling

There is some evidence that this can help neutralize bacteria, but not nearly as well as your good old fluoride toothpaste and teeth cleaning in Arlington.

Homemade Orthodontics

It’s true. People are using paperclips, household items, and plastic bands to straighten their teeth.

This can be a disaster. Not only are you at risk for infection, but you can damage your tooth roots, lose your teeth, and destroy your bite. Please leave orthodontic treatment to dental professionals.

Talk to Your Dentist First

There will always be new trends, everything from charcoal cleanings to self-extractions made easy. Please resist the urge to follow your favorite influencers, no matter how compelling the content.

Always check with your dentist before starting any treatment you find online.
